Golf Rehabilitation & Injury Prevention

Golf Rehab & Injury Prevention for New Hampshire Golfers

Play More. Hurt Less. Swing Better.

Golf is one of the most popular sports in New Hampshire, and for many players, it’s a lifelong passion. Whether you’re walking 18 holes every weekend, competing in club tournaments, or simply enjoying a round with friends, your body plays a major role in how well you play and how much you enjoy the game.

At Granite State Physical Therapy, we help golfers improve mobility, reduce pain, recover from injuries, and build the strength and movement patterns needed for a more efficient golf swing. Brian Verville, DPT, is a Certified Level III Medical Professional with the Titleist Performance Institute (TPI), who leads our Golf Rehabilitation & Injury Prevention Program, which combines physical therapy principles with golf-specific movement assessment and training.

With locations in Concord, Gilford, Hooksett, and Plymouth, we help golfers throughout New Hampshire stay healthy and perform their best on the course.

Golf in New Hampshire

The Granite State is home to nearly 100 golf facilities, with more than three-quarters open to the public, giving golfers access to an incredible variety of courses throughout the state. From mountain views in the White Mountains to lakeside fairways in the Lakes Region and championship-caliber courses in southern New Hampshire, golfers have no shortage of places to play.

Golf participation has also grown significantly in recent years. The game continues to attract more women, juniors, and younger players than ever before, helping make golf one of the fastest-growing recreational activities in the country. Women now account for approximately 28% of on-course golfers, and junior participation has increased dramatically since 2019.

As more people spend time on the course, we’re seeing more golfers looking to improve performance, stay active, and prevent injuries that can interfere with their game.

Common Golf Injuries We Treat

Golf may not be a contact sport, but the repetitive nature of the swing places significant stress on the body.

We commonly work with golfers experiencing:

Low Back Pain
The golf swing places substantial rotational forces on the spine. Limited mobility, poor swing mechanics, weakness, or overuse can contribute to back pain during or after a round.

Golfer’s Elbow and Tennis Elbow
Repetitive gripping and swinging can irritate the tendons around the elbow, leading to pain and reduced performance.

Shoulder Pain
The shoulder plays a critical role throughout the golf swing. Rotator cuff injuries, impingement, tendonitis, and mobility restrictions can limit both comfort and performance.

Hip Pain
The hips generate power and rotational movement during the swing. Restricted mobility or weakness can affect swing efficiency and contribute to pain.

Knee Pain
Walking uneven terrain, rotational forces during the swing, and previous injuries can all contribute to knee discomfort.

Neck Pain
Poor posture, mobility restrictions, and repetitive movement patterns can create tension and pain in the neck and upper back.

Why Golfers Get Injured

Many golf-related injuries are not caused by a single event.

Instead, they develop over time due to:

  • Limited mobility
  • Muscle imbalances
  • Poor stability
  • Reduced strength
  • Swing compensations
  • Inadequate warm-up routines
  • Sudden increases in playing frequency

The body often finds ways to compensate for movement limitations. Unfortunately, those compensations can increase stress on joints, muscles, and tendons, eventually leading to pain or decreased performance.

Golf Performance Assessment

One of the most valuable tools in improving both performance and injury prevention is identifying physical limitations that may affect the golf swing.

Our golf performance assessments commonly include:

Selective Functional Movement Assessment (SFMA)
The SFMA helps identify mobility restrictions, stability deficits, and movement dysfunctions that may contribute to pain or inefficient movement patterns.

Golf-Specific Mobility Evaluation
We assess the mobility and movement quality of key areas involved in the golf swing, including:

  • Hips
  • Thoracic spine
  • Shoulders
  • Ankles
  • Core
  • Strength and Stability Testing

Generating power requires a strong and stable foundation. We evaluate areas that may be limiting performance or increasing injury risk.

Balance and Movement Analysis
Balance plays an important role in consistency, control, and efficient energy transfer throughout the swing.

Golf Rehabilitation in New Hampshire

If you’re already dealing with pain or recovering from an injury, we can develop a personalized treatment plan to help you return to the course safely.

Treatment may include:

  • Manual therapy
  • Joint mobilization
  • Soft tissue techniques
  • Therapeutic exercise
  • Mobility training
  • Strength and conditioning
  • Balance and coordination training
  • Return-to-golf programming

Our goal is not only to reduce pain, but also to address the underlying movement limitations that contributed to the problem.

Custom Orthotics for Golfers

Foot mechanics play an important role in balance, stability, and force generation during the golf swing.

For golfers who may benefit, we offer custom orthotic casting and fitting to help improve comfort, support, and lower extremity alignment both on and off the course.

Why Work with a TPI-Certified Physical Therapist?

The Titleist Performance Institute (TPI) is one of the leading educational organizations in golf performance and injury prevention.

A TPI-certified physical therapist understands how physical limitations can affect the golf swing and how movement patterns may contribute to pain, compensation, and performance issues.

By combining physical therapy expertise with golf-specific training, we help golfers improve movement quality, reduce injury risk, and stay on the course longer.

Who Can Benefit?

Our Golf Rehabilitation & Injury Prevention Program is designed for:

  • Recreational golfers
  • Competitive golfers
  • Junior golfers
  • Senior golfers
  • Golfers returning from injury
