Starting physical therapy might feel a little intimidating, but don’t worry. At Granite State Physical Therapy, we’re here to make it simple and comfortable. Here’s what your first visit will look like:

Check-in & Welcome: We’ll gather a little paperwork and get to know you.

Conversation with Your Physical Therapist: You’ll talk about your symptoms, goals, and what you’d like to get back to doing.

Gentle Assessment: Your physical therapist may check your strength, flexibility, balance, or movement.

Personalized Plan: Together, we’ll create a treatment plan that’s just for you.

Getting Started: Many people begin their first exercises or hands-on treatment right away!

Pro Tip: Wear comfy clothes you can move in, and bring any medical info that might help.

Your first visit is just the beginning of your journey toward moving better, feeling stronger, and getting back to the activities you love.

What to Expect During Your First Physical Therapy Visit

Starting physical therapy for the first time can feel a little overwhelming. You may have questions like: What will happen during my appointment? Will it hurt? What should I wear? What if I’m not sure what’s wrong? These are all common concerns, and knowing what to expect can help you feel more comfortable walking through the clinic door.

Physical therapy is a personalized approach designed to help you move better, reduce pain, improve strength, and get back to the activities that matter most to you. Your first visit is the beginning of a partnership between you and your physical therapist, where your goals become the focus of your care.

Checking in at Granite State Physical Therapy

Check-In and Getting Started

When you arrive for your first appointment at one of our four Granite State Physical Therapy locations (Concord, Gilford, Hooksett, or Plymouth), you’ll begin with some basic paperwork and information gathering. This helps your physical therapist understand your medical history, current concerns, and any factors that may impact your treatment.

You’ll want to bring any relevant medical information, such as imaging reports, physician notes, or a list of medications. Wearing comfortable clothing that allows you to move easily is also helpful. Depending on your area of concern, your physical therapist may need to evaluate how you walk, move, bend, reach, or perform certain activities.

Talking with a physical therapist

Talking With Your Physical Therapist

One of the most important parts of your first visit is the conversation with your physical therapist. Your physical therapist will ask questions about what brought you in, when your symptoms started, what activities are difficult, and what you hope to accomplish.

Everyone’s goals are different. Maybe you want to return to sports, get back to gardening, pick up your grandchildren, improve your balance, or simply move through your day with less discomfort. Sharing what matters most to you helps your physical therapist create a plan that fits your lifestyle.

Initial evaluation with physical therapist

Your Initial Evaluation

During your evaluation, your physical therapist will assess your movement and physical abilities. This may include checking your strength, flexibility, balance, posture, coordination, joint mobility, or movement patterns.

The goal is not to “test” you or find something you’re doing wrong. The evaluation helps your physical therapist understand what may be contributing to your symptoms and how to best help you improve.

Creating Your Personalized Treatment Plan

After your evaluation, your physical therapist will explain their findings and discuss a treatment plan with you. Treatment may include exercises, hands-on techniques, education about your condition, movement strategies, and a home exercise program.

Your plan will be adjusted as you progress. Physical therapy is not a one-size-fits-all process—your care should change as you get stronger and your goals evolve.

What Happens After Your First Visit?

Many patients begin treatment during their first appointment. You may learn a few exercises, receive hands-on care, or practice movements that you can continue at home.

Progress in physical therapy comes from consistency and teamwork. Your physical therapist will guide you, answer questions, and help you understand each step along the way.

Your first physical therapy visit is the first step toward feeling stronger, moving with confidence, and returning to the activities you enjoy. Come with questions, be open about your goals, and remember—at Granite State Physical Therapy, our team is here to help you succeed! Contact us to schedule an appointment.
